A solar battery can be genuinely useful. It can also be the easiest way for a quote to become much more expensive without the homeowner fully understanding why.
The right question is not "are batteries good?" The right question is "does this battery make sense for this home, this tariff, this system and this price?"
What a battery is trying to solve
Solar panels generate during daylight. Many households use a lot of electricity in the evening. Battery storage can hold surplus electricity for later, which may reduce grid imports and improve self-consumption.
Energy Saving Trust explains that batteries can store solar electricity for use at night or during cloudy periods, but also notes that stored energy is less efficient than using solar electricity directly. That trade-off is why the battery should be judged separately from the panels.
The battery quote checklist

Cost and lifespan need their own line
Energy Saving Trust says solar battery costs depend on type and size, with a 5kWh battery system around £4,600. It also says the typical lifespan of a solar battery is about 10 to 12 years. Those are not small details. They can change the payback picture.
If a quote presents the panels and battery as one bundled number, ask for a solar-only price and a battery-added price. That is the cleanest way to see what storage is really doing to the deal.
When a battery may deserve more scrutiny
- You are often home during the day and already use much of the solar generation directly.
- The installer has not asked for your half-hourly or annual usage pattern.
- The battery is included by default without a separate payback view.
- The quote assumes high export income and battery savings at the same time without explaining the balance.
- You are on a tariff that does not support the claimed battery strategy.
- The battery warranty terms are shorter or narrower than the sales claim suggests.
A better battery conversation
A strong installer should be able to answer:
If the answer is mostly generic, pause. The battery might still be useful, but the case has not been made yet.
Do not forget DNO and location
Battery installations may still need to be notified to the Distribution Network Operator if they connect to the grid. Energy Saving Trust says installers should register your solar panel system and any battery storage with the DNO. Ask where the battery will be installed, what ventilation or clearance requirements apply, and whether the quote includes any extra electrical work.
